Adam Wardzinski is one of the top competitors in BJJ, tearing it up in the European and World scene with a slick guard game he uses to sweep opponents. In this week’s video he shares one of the sweeps he’s found the most success, an arm drag butterfly sweep .
(Note: Given the sleeve and belt grips used, the technique is more effective with the gi)
The Technique
Adam starts the set up for the sweep by grabbing a cross sleeve grip and a grip on the armpit with the same side hand. He puts his foot on the opponent’s hip, while attempting an arm drag.
This arm drag could potentially open a back take, but Adam instead anticipates the opponent will defend by posturing up.
When the opponent defends the arm drag it opens up space for Adam to get a butterfly hook.
Wardzinski is going to keep his cross sleeve grip and grab the opponent’s belt with the other hand, while taking his foot off the opponent’s hip. He straightens his foot out and puts it under the opponent and hooks under the opponent’s leg with his arm.
To finish he rotates his body towards his butterfly hook and takes his opponent over to get the sweep.
This is a very slick butterfly sweep set up by Wardzinski and one he uses often in competition. For more techniques like this check out our technique section and look for more techniques added weekly.
