Guard Recovery and Inversion (Lachlan Giles)

Guard Recovery Lachlan Giles

In this video ADCC standout and leg-lock specialist Lachian Giles goes over the principles of guard recovery with inversions. Learning to invert in jiu-jitsu will take your game to another level. It will make your guard harder to pass and give you more set-ups for more submissions.

Giles shows two different options for using an inversion for guard recovery. One for when an opponent attempts a standing guard pass and another for on the ground.

Option 1: Lachian stresses that you always need to be in contact with your opponent. Pushing them away and straightening your legs actually makes it easier for them to pass your guard. If you push them away and invert, you’re giving them side control.

So, when they pick a side to pass, you need to put your far side foot on their hip. The other foot kicks under the far side foot in contact with their hip and you will naturally invert and recover guard.

Option 2: This inversion is for the moment they pass your guard and need to react immediately. As soon as they pass, you need to tuck your head, put your hand between your legs, and invert. It is basically the same motion as a front roll.
