We’ve all been in that situation where someone is about to lock in a triangle and you only have moments to escape. In this video, Garry Tonon shows us how to get out of a triangle at the last second before being forced to tap.
(Note: This is good for both gi or no gi.)
The Technique
The first thing Garry shows is to make space without exposing a limb for the opponent to counter attack. He locks in a gable grip while making sure his elbow doesn’t cross his opponent’s centerline, postures and extends his arms, stands up, and sits back to cross his legs over his opponent.
He doesn’t just keep his legs crossed on the opponent’s chest, because they still pose the danger of uncrossing the legs and making the choke worse. So, what Garry does is keep posture, and bases his feet on the opponent’s biceps.
When the opponent goes to remove his feet, he recrosses his feet across their chest again, extends out, and sits back for an outside heel hook.
This is a great way to get out of a triangle, when you only have seconds before tapping and need to act fast.
