Garry Tonon, in one of the latest videos from BJJ Fanatics, shows us one of his most used techniques – the Victors Roll. This is an easy high percentage submission that everyone should know. See below for some of the key details to this great move.
(Note: This technique can be done in gi or no-gi, but works better no-gi.)
The Technique
In most competitions, a scissor takedown is illegal, but a Victors Roll is very legal. With this technique your legs don’t go across your opponent’s leg and you end up in the same cross ashi garami position.
The first thing you need to set up the Victors roll is break their posture. It will not work if the opponent is standing straight up.
You can set it up by faking low shot forcing them to bend over, which will give you the collar tie you need to do the Victors Roll.
After you establish the collar tie, you’re going to turn, exposing your back to the opponent and back step. Now, the opponent’s leg is between yours, so grab their leg with your non-collar tie arm and do a front roll to complete the Victors Roll.
This is a great move to learn if you like working leg lock submissions. It’s simple, easy, and safer for your partners as you won’t land on their knee like with what can happen with a scissor takedown.
