Using The Gi To Wrestle (Keenan Cornelius)

Keenan Cornelius Worm Wrestling

Keenan Cornelius shares with us some tricks on how to wrestle in BJJ by using the gi in his latest video. While traditional wrestling and judo are typically the go to systems for takedown offense, Keenan’s “worm wrestling” provides a new, and unconventional, set of options .

The Technique

What Keenan calls “worm wrestling” is a way to use lapel grips to get your opponent into wrestling positions. This is for opponents that stall when you use a lapel guard.

It’s a double attack that provides different options depending on how your opponent reacts. If they go forward, you can pull them into lapel guard and if they move away you can use a lapel grip to move into wrestling.

In order to be able to take advantage of worm wrestling you’ll first need to create a handle by pulling your opponent’s gi lapel and getting a grip from the bottom of the gi. From there, you can pull guard or go for a takedown pending how the opponent reacts.

The great thing about learning worm wrestling is the possibilities it opens up. For for techniques like this check out our technique section and look for techniques added weekly.
